1. Deal the Cards
Each player is dealt two cards (Hole Cards) face down. One card is dealt to every player, then another to every player.
2. The Flop
Three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. These are called the Flop. *Discard one card (Burn Card) before the flop.
3. The Turn
One more card is dealt face up in the middle of the table. This is called the Turn. *Discard one card (Burn Card) before the turn.
4. The River
One more card is dealt face up in the middle of the table. This is called the River. *Discard one card (Burn Card) before the river.
5. Betting
There is a betting round after each of the Flop, Turn, and River. Players can bet, raise, call, or fold.
6. Showdown
If more than one player remains after the final betting round, the players show their Hole Cards and the player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.
The cards are dealt in a clockwise direction, and each player has the option to bet, raise, call, or fold. A bet is an amount of money that a player puts into the pot. A raise is an amount of money that a player adds to the pot after someone else has bet. A call is an amount of money that a player matches the bet of another player. A fold is an action that a player takes when they do not want to continue playing the hand.
The pot is the amount of money that is bet by all of the players in the hand. The player with the best hand at the end of the hand wins the pot.
Player Positions
The player to the left of the button is the small blind. They must place an ante before the hand begins. The small blind ante is typically half the size of the big blind. The small blind is also the first player to act.
The player to the left of the small blind is the big blind. They must place an ante before the hand begins. The big blind ante is typically twice the size of the small blind.
The players who are to the left of the button are in early position. These players are typically the blinds and players to their left.
The players who are between early position and late position are in middle position. These players are typically in between the button and blinds.
The players who are just to the right of the button are in late position. These players have the most information about their opponents’ hands, so they are more likely to bet and raise.
The button is the marker that indicates the dealer’s position, even when the dealer is not one of the players. The player to the left of the button is the first player to act in each betting round. After each round the button moves left to the next player.
Best Hands in Poker
Royal Flush
This is the best possible hand in poker. It consists of the ace, king, queen, jack, and ten of the same suit.
Straight Flush
This is a hand that consists of five cards in consecutive order of the same suit.
Four of a Kind
This is a hand that consists of four cards of the same rank.
Full House
This is a hand that consists of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
Flush
This is a hand that consists of five cards of the same suit, but not in consecutive order.
Straight
This is a hand that consists of five cards in consecutive order, but not of the same suit.
Three of a Kind
This is a hand that consists of three cards of the same rank.
Two Pair
This is a hand that consists of two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
Pair
This is a hand that consists of two cards of the same rank.
High Card & Kicker
Whoever has the next highest ranked card.
